Bugs under the skin

I have no idea what made me think of it, perhaps a slight tickle, but today I was wondering about why people who have used stimulants often complain of a sensation of insects crawling under their skin.

If you think that most stimulants have a vasoconstrictive effect, then it follows that once the substance has been stopped, blood vessels, which are perhaps not in the state of health they should be, and rather inflexible, would experience an influx of bloodflow. The resulting pressure on a stiff or inflexible endothelium would likely lead to crawling like sensations beneath the skin – an itch you can’t scratch, whatever…

I wonder how many of these complaints have been dismissed or misread by mental health professionals as a fabrication of the mind, or psychosis.

Physical symptoms seem often to be atributed to a dysfunction of the mind purely because of the environment in which they are reported.
